From Kelo to Black:
Telling the Stories of US Supreme Court Cases

Join Duke University School of Law and the NC Civic Education Consortium for a unique teacher training on the
Supreme Court and its role in American society. Participants will receive 10 DVDs created by Duke Laws Voices
of America Law project, each covering a critical US Supreme Court case. These 20-minute documentaries,
including interviews with the parties themselves, their lawyers, and the judges who shaped the case, expose
students to the stories of the real people affected by the Courts opinions. Participants will also receive an
accompanying lesson plan for each DVD, designed for simple and immediate implementation in the Social Studies
Teachers registering for this training are asked to commit to teaching at least 3 of the cases received, using at
least a portion of the lesson plans provided for each. Participants will also be asked to provide feedback regarding
your experience using the material in the classroom. Duke Law will also offer technical assistance, including
classroom visits to assist with teaching if requested.

Accompanying lessons for each DVD, correlated to the NC Standard Course of Study for Civics &
Economics and US History

$20 travel stipend

Lessons will be aligned to Civics & Economics and US History, but this training is open to any current middle or
high school educator interested in teaching about the US Supreme Court. Space is limited to the first 30

Consortium’s Youth Advisory Committee NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS! (Deadline: June 9, 2009)
Do you know a rising 9th-12th grader seeking a leadership role on an advisory committee? The Consortium’s Youth Advisory Committee is composed of 20 high school students from across North Carolina who serve as an advisory body and ensure the Consortium’s activities continue to meet the needs of its target audience - young people. Committee members travel to UNC-Chapel Hill quarterly to offer input on all Consortium youth initiatives. Members of the committee also serve as role models for civic engagement, as well as spread news of the Consortium’s initiatives in their own schools and communities.
Encourage the high school students you know to apply for this unique opportunity! Students must have transportation so that they may travel to Chapel Hill 4 times per year; however, the Consortium offers mileage reimbursements, as well as hotel accommodations for students & parents traveling more than 300 miles roundtrip.
